Can your home office really be on a cruise ship ? One of the most liberating aspects of running your own business is the freedom to design your workday around what matters most to you. For the past 12 weeks, I've been, arguably, unhealthily heads down building what I hope, will be a really valuable platform product -often working 18-hour days (with only brief breaks over the holidays). Earlier this month, my business partner decide to hold our end of phase review in rather vanilla, WeWork-like environment. Stepping out of my usual home office was a refreshing reminder that freedom in work isn't just about the hours you keep-it's also about the places you choose to be.
Knowing I was facing a week packed with planning, documentation, and bug fixes at the end of February, I wanted to again step away from the home office, I wanted to try something different. After crunching the numbers on traditional office spaces, travel, and hotels, one idea stood out: what if I could work effectively from a cruise ship sailing around Northern Europe? Increasingly cruise lines (Virgin, Royal Caribbean etc) have begun marketing cruises as affordable alternatives for nomad and hybrid workers. For digital workers the lure is real, and economically viable; Here's why it made sense: - Familiar Territory: I'm no stranger to cruises-they're my preferred way to vacation.
I was confident I could seamlessly blend work with the cruise lifestyle. - Digital Freedom: Working in the AI space means that all I really need is a laptop and a reliable internet connection. - Real-World Alignment: Ironically, our product is designed to empower solo-preneurs, small businesses, and professionals to run their businesses from anywhere. Experiencing it firsthand was the perfect validation. - Cost: Find a last minute bargain, as I did, and it is really as cheap as a week's rental in shared office, accommodation and travel.
Most things are inclusive, so costs are marginal when you get onboard. So, how did it go? A cruise ship is essentially a floating hotel. With solid Starlink internet, diverse workspaces, a gym, bars, and plenty of entertainment, it proved to be an unexpectedly productive environment. My daily routine was invigorating: - Morning: I started at 6:30/7 AM with a 20-minute walk on the open deck, followed by coffee and catching up on emails in the main atrium. - Mid-Morning: Breakfast at one of the many onboard restaurants at 9 AM set the tone for a productive session until noon.
- Afternoon: After a couple of hours of R&R exploring port cities like Rotterdam, Hamburg, and Bruges, I returned refreshed for another focused work session. - Evening: I wrapped up final emails before heading to dinner, just steps from my temporary office-space, then planned the next day over a cocktail (or two) before enjoying a live music event. This adventure has reinforced that with the right mindset and tools, productivity isn't confined to a traditional office space. There are so many burdens of the digital age that we often can forget the benefits.
Freedom.
